APA Publishing Internship Program 2009

Proudly Supported by Copyright Agency Limited (CAL) Cultural Fund

CAL Cultural FundAfter a highly competitive application process, five publishing companies have been selected for the Australian Publishers Association Internship Program 2009. The APA Publishing Internship Program assists publishers in filling a growing need for the strategic placement of quality candidates into a variety of challenging positions within publishing houses. This is a wonderful opportunity for publishers to engage talented and qualified publishing graduates, and to attract the best and brightest into training for key positions within their companies. It provides an incentive to attract the kind of talent the industry needs and will contribute to the long-term development of a highly skilled publishing sector. It places interns in challenging and constructive environments to enhance their skills and employment potential.

The successful publishing companies were selected for the depth of the experience that they were offering the intern, the selection committee’s assessment of the value of the internship position to the advancement of the industry and the clarity and breadth of the application in relation to providing a measurable and comprehensive internship experience.  While many of the applications were of a high standard, we believe the successful companies have fulfilled those criteria in an exceptional way and have been chosen on the merit of their application.

We are pleased to announce that following five companies have been successful in receiving funding for internship placements in 2009:

Australian Book Review, Melbourne — Editorial Intern

Black Dog Books, Melbourne — Editorial Intern

Oxford University Press, Melbourne — Editorial Intern, Higher Education Division

Scribe Publications, Melbourne — Editorial Intern

Walker Books, Sydney — Book Design Intern

We are also pleased to welcome The Text Publishing Company as part of the program again this year. Text was one of 5 successful companies to receive funding for an internship placement in 2008. After a hugely successful placement, Text will be offering an internship position again this year, fully funded by the company.

The Text Publishing Company, Melbourne – Publicity / Marketing Intern

Publishing companies that have been successful in receiving funding for internship placements in previous years, are encouraged to join the program in subsequent years, and fully fund their own placement. If you are interested in joining the program in this capacity please contact Libby O’Donnell elizabeth.odonnell@publishers.asn.au  Ph: 02 9281 9788.

Resolutions of the 28th IPA Publishers Congress

The 28th IPA Publishers Congress took place in Seoul, Korea on 12-15 May 2008. It attracted some 600 publishers and guests from 45 countries. The Congress ended on 15 May with the presentation of the Resolutions, the formal concluding document of the event. The Resolutions focus on the key issues for publishers in the future: Freedom to publish, copyright, national book policy promotion, free enterprise in publishing. A new emphasis was put on translation issues.

The IPA Congress Resolutions are here.

Equal Access Resolution

On World Book and Copyright Day, 23 April, the International Publishers Association's Copyright Committee focused its attention on readers who are unable to access material in the same way as sighted readers. A statement confirming that "it is a shared ambition of publishers around the world to make their works accessible to all readers" was released. A copy of the full statement is available here.

Revised imprint page notices

Revised imprint page notices for use on schools material are now available to members. These notices have been prepared by the APA Schools Educational Publishing Committee in conjunction with the Copyright Agency Limited and are provided as a free service to APA members. Members are under no obligation to use the suggested notices but are welcome to use them as they see fit.

Similar notices were made available to members a few years ago. Changes have been made to the notices and these reflect changes in copyright law since that time.

There is one new suggested notice which is for an educational book, where the whole book has a publisher's licence to copy for an individual teacher.  It relates to those books other than  BLM books where the publisher permits an individual teacher to (only) photocopy the complete book.

For APA Members, more news and reports are available in the Members Only section. If you have problems logging in please contact Kellie Cameron at the APA.
