Publishers' Rights Pages
After the United States, United Kingdom and Canada, Australia is the world's largest English language book market.
The majority of books sold are to general consumers (predominantly sold through traditional retail outlets and to libraries), while the remainder are sold to the educational and professional/reference markets.
As a first world economy with a strong multicultural mix, Australia has a literate and cosmopolitan population that sustains not only a strong local book publishing industry, but also supports a wide variety of magazines and newspapers. According to a recent ACNielsen survey, Australians spend more time reading than they do on other leisure pastimes such as going to the cinema, playing computer games and surfing the internet.
Australian publishers derive an increasing amount of their income from exports as more and more Australian books find their way into overseas markets.
