The interns for the 2024 Open Book: Australian Publishing Internship have been announced, following a huge increase in applications.

The paid internship program launched in 2021 as a joint sector initiative, with Open Book developed to create alternate pathways into publishing for people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. The Open Book program hosts three interns across both Sydney and Melbourne, supported by a mentor.

From the 326 applications received, Olivia Garcia, Tayla Goodman, and Nashin Mahee have been selected as the 2024 Open Book interns from an incredibly strong calibre of applicants – learn about them below.

Over the course of the six month program, interns will gain in-house experience at Australian publishing organisations from across the commercial, independent, and education sectors. They will also have the opportunity to meet with a range of industry professionals from the broader publishing industry – including literary agencies, writers festivals and bookstores. Interns are also supported by a mentor, Olivia Whenman, who will act as an external contact to guide and support them through their internship.

Sydney intern, Olivia Garcia

Olivia Garcia moved from New Zealand to Argentina before settling in Sydney, where she grew up immersed in languages and stories. She completed a postgraduate degree in Editing and Publishing at UTS, where she was involved with student publications. Being raised in a Spanish-speaking home, she values the importance of unique voices in the stories we share. She also loves getting involved in literary events and communities — always looking for her next favourite read despite an endless TBR pile. Through publishing she hopes to explore her passion for stories that transform, impact and inspire.

Olivia will be undertaking placements at UNSW Press/NewSouth Books and Hachette Australia.
