What achievements are you proudest of in your career so far?

Entering the industry in May last year and diving headfirst into peak season planning was a whirlwind of learning and growth! I couldn’t be prouder of our team’s great performance during last year’s peak period. Witnessing tangible improvements in our delivery times and implementing robust risk mitigation strategies was truly inspiring. The cherry on top was receiving great feedback from our valued booksellers. It’s incredibly fulfilling to know that our collective efforts played a vital role in connecting countless books with eager readers across Australia and New Zealand.

This year’s BookUp program has a strong focus on innovation and adaptation. How do you think the publishing industry will change in the coming years? And what excites you about those changes?

The landscape of publishing is always ready for innovation, and I’m excited at the prospect of leveraging cutting-edge technology to revolutionise how we operate. From AI-powered predictive analytics to optimise inventory management to solutions ensuring transparency and security throughout the supply chain, the possibilities are truly exciting. By harnessing these advancements, we can not only react quicker to customer demand but also anticipate trends and tailor our offerings accordingly. This commitment to innovation not only enhances our efficiency but also fosters a dynamic and forward-thinking culture within our team. I’m eagerly anticipating the transformative impact these innovations will have on our industry, and I’m excited to be a part of it.

What surprised you about the industry when you first joined, or still surprises you now?

Transitioning from a traditional retail background to the world of books undoubtedly brought its share of surprises, and the concept of sale-or-return terms is indeed a significant eye-opener. The sheer scale of what this entails for us as a distributor and its ripple effects throughout the industry is nothing short of remarkable. While returns are an integral part of the business landscape, I find myself continually pondering ways in which we can enhance this process. I firmly believe that sustainable business practices are not just a trend but a necessity for the future. That’s why I’m dedicated to channelling my efforts towards developing sustainable returns solutions, which would work for the retailers, publishers and the recyclers in Australia. Not an easy task, however I’m committed to finding better ways at doing this and driving positive change in the industry.

What advice do you have for newcomers who want to build a career in publishing? What has helped you along the way?

My journey into the world of book distribution and publishing is unique and showcases the importance of recognising your strengths and passions. My love for reading has guided me towards a career where I can contribute with my expertise and knowledge. It’s essential to find where your skills align best within an industry and leverage them to make a meaningful impact. Additionally, emphasising the importance of people and fostering strong relationships within your network is crucial. Building a supportive community of mentors, colleagues, and industry connections not only enriches my professional development but also enhances the overall work experience. When people are at the heart of everything we do, collaboration flourishes, creativity thrives, and work becomes more fulfilling and enjoyable.
